What Is a NEF File?
A NEF file is Nikon's RAW image format, created by Nikon DSLR and mirrorless cameras. NEF stands for Nikon Electronic Format, and the name fits: rather than a finished photo, it stores the unprocessed signal from the sensor, which Nikon describes as a digital negative you develop later.
TL;DRNEF is Nikon's RAW format, holding the editable sensor data behind a shot. Convert copies to JPG to share, and keep the NEF originals as masters.
A NEF records 12 or 14 bits of tone per channel, far beyond the 8 bits in a JPG, which is what lets editors push exposure and color so hard without banding.
What Makes NEF Powerful
Because a NEF keeps the sensor data instead of a processed image, your camera's choices are not final. White balance, exposure, and picture style are stored as instructions you can change afterward, and the file even remembers which lens and settings were used so software can apply the right corrections.
Editing a NEF is non-destructive. Your changes are saved as a separate set of instructions, usually in a sidecar file, while the original sensor data stays untouched. You can always reset to how the shot came out of the camera.
The Compatibility Problem
A NEF is a Nikon-specific format, so it will not open in a web browser, on most phones, or in everyday office software. Even between programs that do read RAW, support for new Nikon cameras can lag, since each model can tweak the format. To use a shot widely, you convert it first.
How to Convert a NEF File
To share or print Nikon shots, convert NEF to JPG. A batch converter processes a whole folder at once, turning each NEF into a standard JPG at the size and quality you choose, so the photos open on any device while the originals stay intact.
Always keep the NEF originals. The JPG you export is a flattened copy with the edits locked in; the NEF is the master you return to when you want to re-process a shot differently.
